What is the Ideal Bedroom Temperature? Tips for a Better Night's Sleep

| By Scharon

A good night's sleep is essential to our health and well-being, but bedroom temperature can play a big role in how well we sleep. Just what is the ideal bedroom temperature? Let's take a look at the recommendations for adults as well as babies and children.

The Ideal Bedroom Temperature for Adults:

  • For most adults, the ideal bedroom temperature is between 16°C and 21°C. However, it is important to experiment and discover what temperature works best for your personal sleep needs.
  • In general, most people sleep better at a temperature around 18°C, while others prefer slightly higher or lower temperatures.
  • Women and lean people often prefer slightly warmer temperatures than men and overweight people.

The Ideal Bedroom Temperature for Babies and Children:

  • For babies and young children, the bedroom temperature is especially important because of their less effective heat regulation. Too high a temperature can be poorly tolerated.
  • For babies younger than 2 months, a temperature between 18 and 20°C is recommended. For premature babies, add the number of weeks early to the recommended temperature.
  • From two months, the bedroom temperature should be kept around 16-18°C.

Tips for when it's too Cold:

  • Warm the bedroom before bedtime or provide extra blankets and warm bedding.
  • Close windows and use an electric blanket to pre-heat the bed if necessary.
  • Wear warm clothes and put on socks if necessary to avoid cold feet.

Tips for when it's too hot:

  • Try to keep the heat out by using blinds or shutters.
  • Use light bedding and avoid overly thick blankets to prevent overheating.
  • If possible, open a window for ventilation, but avoid drafts.

Maintaining a comfortable bedroom temperature is essential for a good night's sleep, for adults as well as babies and children. Experiment with different temperatures and adjust your sleep environment to promote the best rest.
