PCM technology, cool sleep during hot nights

| By Scharon

PCM stands for Phase Change Material, which means phase change material in Dutch. PCM technology is often used in weight blankets, also called weighted blankets, to provide additional comfort and therapeutic benefits.

cPCMs are substances capable of storing and releasing heat as they pass from one phase to another, for example, from solid to liquid and vice versa. This process occurs at a constant temperature and therefore provides a stabilizing effect. When the ambient temperature rises, the PCM absorbs heat and becomes liquid. When the temperature drops, the PCM releases heat and becomes solid again.

In the case of weight blankets, PCMs are used to provide a sense of comfort by regulating temperature. They can help maintain a constant, comfortable temperature while sleeping. This can be especially helpful for people who are sensitive to temperature fluctuations or who have difficulty regulating their body temperature during sleep.

PCM technology can also give the weight blanket an added dimension of comfort by distributing weight evenly and creating a sense of embrace, which in turn can help reduce stress and anxiety, and promote deeper, more restful sleep.

So how does PCM work with a heavy blanket/in your bed?

- As you roll up or lay down properly to sleep, the body gradually begins to release the heat underneath it

- PCM comforters respond with built-in cooling intelligence once the temperature reaches a constant level

- The phase-changing materials (in the form of gels, waxes or polymer chains) in comforters absorb the heat generated & cool your bed (these do not melt, even in high temperatures) keeping the cooling effect constant throughout the sleep schedule.

Let's delve deeper into the benefits of PCM technology in heavy-duty blankets:

  1. cTemperature regulation: PCMs can help maintain a constant temperature during sleep. They absorb heat when the ambient temperature rises and release heat when the temperature drops. This creates a more even sleep environment, which can be especially helpful for people who are sensitive to temperature fluctuations or have nighttime hot flashes.

  2. Comfort: The thermal properties of PCMs contribute to the overall comfort of the weight blanket. By maintaining a constant temperature, PCM technology minimizes the feeling of being too hot or too cold, making users feel more comfortable while sleeping.

  3. Deeper sleep: By creating a more comfortable sleep environment, PCM technology can help promote deeper, more restful sleep. This can lead to feeling better rested upon awakening and improved overall well-being.

  4. Stress reduction: The weight and embracing sensation of a weight blanket, combined with the temperature-regulating properties of PCMs, can help reduce stress and anxiety. This is because the deep pressure stimulation provided by a heavy blanket, along with the constant, comfortable temperature, can have a calming effect on the nervous system.

  5. Therapeutic benefits: For people with sleep problems, anxiety disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders and other conditions, using a heavy blanket with PCM technology can offer therapeutic benefits. It can help improve sleep quality, reduce restlessness and promote a sense of well-being.

  6. Adaptability: Heavy-duty blankets with PCM technology are often designed with removable covers, allowing users to adapt the blanket to their personal preferences and seasonal temperature changes.
