Getting up at night to eat: Innocent or not?
The phenomenon of getting up at night to eat is recognizable to many, but can sometimes be more than just a slight hunger. Both Night Eating Syndrome (NES) and Sleep Related Eating Disorders (SRED) are disorders in which people wake up at night with an irresistible urge to eat. This can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health.

- SRED: Eating happens during sleepwalking and is not remembered.
- Impact:
- Weight gain
- Fatigue
- Dejection due to guilt
- Risk of injury from sleepwalking with kitchen utensils
Cause: sleep problems
- Both disorders can be caused by factors such as stress, disturbed biorhythms and sleep quality.
- Vicious cycle: Nighttime eating leads to less appetite during the day, which in turn leads to more cravings at night.
Aanpak
- Avoiding stress: Relaxation before bedtime can reduce stress and help prevent nighttime eating.
- Restore biorhythms: Eat at set times, even when you are not hungry, and maintain a regular sleep rhythm.
- Comfortable sleeping environment: Provide a comfortable bed, mattress and pillow, and create a restful bedroom environment.
If these tips do not help or if a sleep disorder is suspected, it is advisable to consult a physician for further evaluation and treatment.
