Can supplemental melatonin help children with sleep problems?
Synthetic melatonin, although originally marketed to combat jet lag, is now also used to treat sleep disorders. However, experts are cautious about its use in children under the age of 12.
What does melatonin do for our sleep?
Melatonin, produced by the pineal gland, prepares our body for sleep by regulating our sleep-wake cycle. However, it is not a sleeping pill but a biorhythm synchronizer.
Why is it not recommended for children under 12 years of age?
Although melatonin is effective and well tolerated in short-term treatment of sleep insomnia in children, there is still insufficient long-term data on melatonin in children and adolescents. Its prescription is therefore still controversial.
Medications vs. dietary supplements:
In Belgium, melatonin is sold by prescription only for people over 55 years of age. Dietary supplements containing melatonin are available, but are not recommended, especially for children under 12, because of side effects and unproven effectiveness.
Melatonin and ADHD:
In certain cases, such as children with ADHD, melatonin may be considered as a short-term treatment for sleep disorders.
How do you help a child who sleeps poorly?
Focus on good sleep hygiene, such as adequate exercise during the day, limiting screen time before bed, and establishing a consistent bedtime routine. Foods rich in tryptophan can promote the natural production of melatonin.
Consult a physician:
In cases of proven sleep disorders, consultation with a primary care physician and/or pediatrician is essential, as other treatment options are available, such as behavioral therapy.
